The Eucalyptus Pauciflora is mainly found throughout snowy mountains, right from Southern New South Wales, to Canberra, Victoria and Tasmania. This tree has a long-lived lifespan and usually grows to 10-20 meters tall and on the rare occasion up to 30 meters. The Eucalyptus Pauciflora can handle wind, snow and ice but is still able to grow in various areas including shallow rocky soils in very exposed dry areas to snowy areas on high ridge tops. The average temperate for the Eucalyptus Pauciflora is 2-17 degrees Celsius, and the average rainfall from 600-1900mm.
A challenge the plant faces is its extreme cold, windy and wet conditions, as it is a plant that is found throughout cold and wet conditions. The plant is able to handle conditions up to -5 degrees although if temperatures go below this threshold it may be difficult for the tree to function and survive
Although the trees are found in snowy conditions, they can also be found throughout bushland, this is where they face the challenge of bushfires, this is a challenge for the plant but in most cases it is know to survive and re-grow.
Behavioural Adaptation:
A behavioural adaptation the Eucalyptus Pauciflora has evolved is it is able to shed bark which enables the tree to re-grow after it has been burt of destroyed from a bushed. This type of tree is also able to withstand snow and wind due to the stretch of the root system. The plant has also adapted to freezing temperatures when ice, and snow are present in the trees environment.
Structural Adaptation:
The Eucalyptus Pauciflora structural adaptation is that it grows to a hight of 10-20 meters minimum, this enables the tree to continue to breath, this is to ensure is snow cover the roots system or half of the tree it is still able to breath due to the height of the tree.
Interesting fact:
The tree has a few various names and can be also known as Snow Gum, White Sallee, Cabbage Gum, Weeping Gum or Ghost Gum.
